President Joe Biden professes to be a Roman Catholic, and yet he just signed an executive order attempting to protect abortion rights. While the executive order has little power in the face of the Supreme Court rolling back Roe v Wade, it is yet another symbol of the absence of integrity in politics. A voter may be forced to vote for the “lesser of two evils” because no single candidate reflects his value system across a spectrum of issues, but a decent politician should advocate for what he believes to be right, true, and just. Of course, a politician that doesn’t bend with the prevailing wind to get and stay in office is a rarity. But isn’t that what is wrong?
One of the foundational elements of being Catholic is to protect children in the womb, yet President Biden, who proclaims that he is a Catholic, advocates for the grotesque practice of abortion, the killing of the most defenseless and vulnerable among us. A person can claim to be a vegetarian, plastering “say no to meat” bumper stickers on their car, but does it mean a thing if they spend their lunch breaks scarfing down double cheeseburgers? Actions speak louder than words. While no human being is perfect and only God can judge another’s soul, it is clear when someone continuously and willfully violates the fundamental values and spirit of their faith in a blatant manner, and not because of the tendency of a human being to fall short of aspirations of consistent pureness and holiness but from a conscious choice to lust for power, influence, and job security. Either President Biden is a Catholic and believes that life begins at conception and has chosen political power over heavenly power, or he isn’t a Catholic and is just using that label for his public identity. Just as you can’t be a vegetarian and consistently eat meat, you cannot truly be a Catholic and consistently pursue public policies that are destructive to the fundamental tenets of your faith.
Overturning Roe v Wade has been 50 years in the making. “Controlling one’s own body” is one thing but a child in her mother’s womb is a separate person. Women’s rights? President Biden should think about the unborn girls being aborted and consider their rights! The best thing President Biden can do now is admit he has been led astray by his pursuit of earthly power and adopt the fundamental teachings of his religion. It’s never too late to change one’s life. If that sounds like a pipedream, that merely reflects another cynical aspect of politics– politicians rarely admitting they have been wrong.
